Iowa Business Entity Search
Search the state's official business records.
Iowa's register is free to search at sos.iowa.gov. Two fields, one button, no account, and a search that behaves better than its own instructions claim.
The form tells you one thing and does another
The hint under the search box reads:
Enter the first few letters or words of the business name
That describes a starts-with search. It is not one. A search for Acme returns AACME LLC and "ACME" & DESIGN, both of which have Acme in the middle, not at the start.
So the search is wider than the instruction claims, which is the right way round to be wrong. Take the behavior, not the hint: Iowa matches anywhere in the name and there is no setting to change it.
The Legal Name column
This is what makes Iowa worth knowing about.
Iowa searches trade names and legal names in the same pass, labels which is which in a Type column, and then (the useful part) names the company behind each trade name in a Legal Name column.
Search Acme and ACME ACCOUNTS comes back marked Fictitious name, with NATIONAL DOMAIN SERVICES, LLC beside it as the legal name.
In most states a trade name is a separate lookup, and finding out who owns one is a second lookup after that. Iowa puts both answers in the row.
A record in eight tabs
Open an entity and it arrives tabbed: Address, Agent, Filings, Names, Officers, Protected Series, Stock and Summary.
It opens on Summary: the business number, legal name, status, type, state of incorporation, expiration and effective dates, filing date, and the chapter of the Iowa Code the entity is filed under. That reads like a finished page, and seven tabs of substance sit one click away.
Protected Series is the one worth knowing about. Iowa recognizes series LLCs and gives each protected series its own place on the record rather than burying it in the filings. Very few registers surface series structure at all.
Officers names the people. Names carries former and trade names.
The Filings tab counts the pages
The Filings tab lists a certificate number that links to the document, a filing date, an effective date, the filing type, and a page count.
That last column is unusual and quietly useful: you can see a document is two pages or forty before you decide whether to open it.
A free certificate
The record carries a Print Certificate of Registration button, and Iowa generates it from the record at no charge.
Most states sell a certificate of good standing. South Dakota, Nevada and Maine all price one at $30 to $50. Iowa hands you a registration certificate for nothing. It is not the same document as a certificate of existence, but for showing a bank or a landlord that a company is on the register, it often does the job.
Who decides
The register records filings. Whether a filing is accepted is decided when the Secretary of State examines it, under the Iowa Revised Uniform Limited Liability Company Act, Iowa Code Chapter 489.
Iowa does something unusually good with its fee schedule: it cites the statute against every fee. The formation fee is given as Iowa Code 489.201, dissolution as 489.702, conversion as 489.1045. You can check any price against the law that sets it without leaving the page.
Before you rely on it
Ignore the "first few letters" hint. The search matches anywhere in the name, which is better than advertised.
Read the Type and Legal Name columns together. A fictitious name and the company behind it are both in the row.
Click past Summary. Seven tabs hold everything that matters, including officers and any protected series.
Print the certificate if you need proof of registration. It costs nothing.
Iowa filing facts
| Filing | Fee | Set by |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate of Organization | $50.00 | Iowa Code 489.201 |
| Foreign Registration Statement | $100.00 | Iowa Code 489.903 |
| Merger | $50.00 | Iowa Code 489.1025 |
| Conversion | $50.00 | Iowa Code 489.1045 |
| Dissolution or termination | $5.00 | Iowa Code 489.702 |
| Correction | $5.00 | Iowa Code 489.209 |
At $50 to form, Iowa is among the cheapest states in the country to start in: half of Ohio, a sixth of Texas. Dissolving costs $5, which is worth knowing: some states charge as much to close a company as to open one.
We are not quoting a biennial report fee or a name reservation fee. Neither appears in the LLC section of the state's fee page, and we would rather leave them out than print a figure we have not read.
For scale against those prices: 38,250 applications in the 52 weeks to 26 September 2026, which is 153 a business day and up 12.0% on the year. Iowa ranks 38th of 51.
What the register will not tell you
Iowa has 16,742 live registered marks, and two of the crowded words are crowded for a reason most states cannot claim:
| word | live marks | times more common than nationally |
|---|---|---|
| iowa | 733 | 217x |
| gardens | 317 | 46x |
| homes | 332 | 17x |
| better | 481 | 7x |
| living | 251 | 5x |
| life | 520 | 3x |
| pro | 245 | 2x |
Better, homes and gardens all sit in the top seven, and they are not independent. Better Homes & Gardens is published from Des Moines, and its presence pulls three ordinary English words into Iowa's most contested list: gardens at 46 times the national rate, homes at 17, better at 7.
If you are naming an Iowa business around home, garden or living, you are walking into ground a single large publisher has occupied for a century. Check the federal register before you commit.
Filing concentrates modestly: Des Moines 14.7%, West Des Moines 7.6%, Cedar Rapids 6.8%.
What the Iowa portal looks like
Captured from the live register. Personal names and addresses are blacked out; everything else is as the state publishes it.

Common questions about Iowa business entity searches
How do I check if an LLC exists in Iowa?
Search the name on this page or on the state's own portal. What Iowa does by default is worth knowing before you read the result: contains, despite what the form says. The hint under the box reads Enter the first few letters or words of the business name, which describes a starts-with search. It is not one: a search for Acme returns AACME LLC and "ACME" & DESIGN, both of which have Acme in the middle. Take the wider behaviour, not the hint. A match means the entity is on file, and its status line tells you whether it is still active.
How do I verify a company is registered in Iowa?
Search the name, then open the record rather than reading the results line. A tabbed record: Address, Agent, Filings, Names, Officers, Protected Series, Stock and Summary. The status on the record is the one to trust: a dissolved company still appears in a search and still holds its name.
Does a clear search mean my Iowa business name is approved?
Not on its own. A no-match result means the name is not on the Iowa register today, which is a preliminary answer rather than approval: Iowa Secretary of State decides when it reviews the filing. Worth knowing about Iowa in particular: the instruction under the box tells you to enter the first few letters or words. That is Iowa telling you it matches from the beginning of the name, and there is no setting to change it. A name held inside a longer one will not come back, so try the distinctive word on its own.
Can I look up who owns a business in Iowa?
Iowa carries an Officers tab on the record, one of eight.
How much does it cost to register a business name in Iowa?
Iowa Secretary of State charges $50 to file the Certificate of Organization, which is the document that forms the company, and currently takes 5-10 business days to process. Reserving a name beforehand is a separate and smaller fee. Confirm the figure with the state before you file: schedules move.
