Nebraska Business Entity Search
Search the state's official business records.
Nebraska's register is searchable free at nebraska.gov/sos/corp/corpsearch.cgi, run by the Secretary of State. No account needed.
The state tells you this is not a name check
Printed above the search box, in the state's own words:
To check name availability, you must submit a written request to the Secretary of State's office by e-mail, fax, or mail.
Every state register has this limitation. A search shows what has been filed; it does not tell you what the state will accept. What makes Nebraska worth pausing on is that it is the only one that says so on the search page, before you type anything.
So if the name matters, the search is your first step and not your last. The written request goes to sos.corp@nebraska.gov, by fax to (402) 471-3666, or by post to P.O. Box 94608, Lincoln, NE 68509-4608.
Nothing is chosen for you
Most portals arrive with a match mode already set, usually a narrow one, and most people never notice. Nebraska picks nothing. The form does nothing at all until you choose one of five options:
- Name Starts With
- Name Keyword Search, which then opens a second choice underneath it, Match All Words or Match Any Word
- Name Sounds Like
- Name Exact Match
- Account Number
Each carries its own help bubble. Being made to choose is a small friction that saves you from the commoner mistake of running a narrow search you did not know was narrow.
For checking whether a name is taken, Name Keyword Search with Match Any Word is the widest net, and Name Sounds Like is the one that catches what a name-availability reviewer would catch and a literal search would not.
One search, four registers
The search covers entities, trade names, trademarks and service marks together.
That is less common than it sounds. In most states a trade name is a separate lookup and the mark register is a third, so a name clear on the company register can be spoken for as a trade name without you ever finding out. Nebraska searches all of them in one pass, which puts it with Hawaii and against most of the country.
Practical things to expect
There is a reCAPTCHA. It sits between the name field and the Perform Search button, and the page says so: For security purposes, you must complete reCAPTCHA. Tick it before you submit or the search will not run.
Certificates and documents are sold, not shown. Certificates of good standing and images of filed documents are available for purchase. Ohio, Washington and Iowa give you filed documents free; Nebraska does not.
Bulk records have a price list. Batches can be ordered through Nebraska.gov's Special Requests at $15 per 1,000 records.
Type in capitals. Nebraska's records are held in upper case and matched literally, so a mixed-case query can come back empty when the name is in fact on the register.
This portal is being replaced
A banner on the search page states that the Secretary of State's office is transitioning to a new business entity search and filing system, expected to be live before the end of the 2026 calendar year.
The address above, and everything on this page about how the search behaves, is about to change. If you are reading this after the new system lands, start from the Secretary of State's site rather than a saved link.
Where Nebraska writes the rules down
The governing law is the Nebraska Uniform Limited Liability Company Act, Neb. Rev. Stat. Chapter 21, and it is unusually easy to check against, because the obligations are pinned to sections rather than buried: the Certificate of Organization fee at § 21-117, the biennial report at § 21-125.
Which is a useful habit to have in a state that has already told you, on the search page itself, that the search is not the answer.
Before you rely on it
Send the written request if the name matters. The state has told you the search is not the answer.
Pick a wide search method deliberately. Nothing is selected until you select it.
Search in capitals.
Do it before the new system arrives, or check the address again afterwards.
Nebraska filing facts
| Filing | Fee | Statute |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate of Organization, filed online | $100.00 | § 21-117 |
| Certificate of Organization, filed in office | $110.00 | § 21-117 |
| Biennial Report | $30.00 | § 21-125 |
Nebraska reports every two years, not every year, and only in odd-numbered years. The report is due by 1 April and becomes delinquent from 16 June.
That is worth putting beside the states that bill annually. Over a four-year stretch a Nebraska LLC files twice; a Washington one files four times at $70 a go. On recurring cost Nebraska is among the cheapest places in the country to keep a company alive.
For scale: 24,200 applications in the 52 weeks to 26 September 2026, a rise of 10.6%, which comes to about 97 each business day. That ranks Nebraska 41st of 51: a small register, and a busy one for its size.
The most concentrated naming ground in the country
Nebraska has 11,579 live registered trademarks, a small pool. What is remarkable is where they come from and what they say.
Omaha accounts for 53.7% of every trademark in the state. Lincoln adds 17.3%. Two cities hold seven marks in ten. No other state we have measured is that concentrated; Hawaii's Honolulu manages 45%, Washington's Seattle 30.7%, and Texas has no single center at all.
The words follow:
| word | live marks | times more common than nationally |
|---|---|---|
| omaha | 400 | 341x |
| dtn | 240 | 326x |
| nebraska | 281 | 293x |
| plus | 169 | 4x |
| home | 246 | 3x |
| care | 194 | 3x |
| health | 215 | 2x |
| pro | 170 | 2x |
Three words sit at roughly three hundred times the national rate and then the list falls off a cliff. Everything below nebraska is ordinary: plus, home, care, health and pro are the same generic boosters that turn up mildly over-represented in every state.
dtn is the odd one. A three-letter string appearing 240 times at 326 times the national rate is not a naming trend; it is the signature of a single company's mark portfolio sitting inside a small register. It is a good reminder that in a state this size, one active filer moves the whole picture.
The practical reading: if your name uses Omaha or Nebraska, assume it is contested and check the federal register. Almost anything else is open country.
What the Nebraska portal looks like
Captured from the live register. Personal names and addresses are blacked out; everything else is as the state publishes it.

The office handles registration, not disputes. If a name is already taken, they will tell you it is unavailable but not who holds it beyond what the public record shows, and they will not advise on whether your name infringes someone’s mark.
Common questions about Nebraska business entity searches
How do I check if an LLC exists in Nebraska?
Search the name on this page or on the state's own portal. What Nebraska does by default is worth knowing before you read the result: none. Nebraska picks nothing for you. Every option carries its own help bubble. A match means the entity is on file, and its status line tells you whether it is still active.
How do I verify a company is registered in Nebraska?
A company is registered in Nebraska if it appears on the Nebraska Secretary of State register with an active status. Search the name, open the record, and check the status field rather than the summary line: a dissolved company still appears in results but is no longer in good standing.
Does a clear search mean my Nebraska business name is approved?
Not on its own. A no-match result means the name is not on the Nebraska register today, which is a preliminary answer rather than approval: Nebraska Secretary of State decides when it reviews the filing. Worth knowing about Nebraska in particular: it says on this page that the online search is not how you check a name. To check availability you have to submit a written request to the Secretary of State by email, fax or post. Use the search to rule names out, then write in about the one you want.
Can I look up who owns a business in Nebraska?
The Nebraska register shows the registered agent and, depending on the filing type, officers or organizers. It does not list members or shareholders for every entity, so the register identifies who accepts legal service rather than who owns the company.
How much does it cost to register a business name in Nebraska?
Nebraska Secretary of State charges $100 to file the Certificate of Organization, which is the document that forms the company, and is processed approximately a week for document review. Reserving a name beforehand is a separate and smaller fee. Confirm the figure with the state before you file: schedules move.
