New Jersey Business Entity Search
Search the state's official business records.
New Jersey's name search is free, run by the Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services inside the Department of the Treasury. Not a Secretary of State: New Jersey keeps its business registry with the tax authority.
It answers the question instead of handing you a list
Nearly every state register works the same way. You search a word, you get rows of companies, and you are left to decide for yourself whether any of them is close enough to matter.
New Jersey does not do that. Search a name and it returns a verdict: the name is available, or it is Not Available and may be in conflict with something already on file. Underneath the verdict it prints the similar businesses it found.
Only two states we have looked at will commit to an answer like that. South Carolina shows a banner reading This name is currently being used. New Jersey goes further and frames the whole tool around the question.
What it will not do
There is no record page. None at all.
The similar names underneath the verdict are plain text, not links. You cannot click through to a status, an agent, a formation date, a filing history or an officer. There is nothing to open.
So this is a name-availability tool and not a company-research tool. If you want to know whether a New Jersey company is in good standing, or who its registered agent is, this search will not tell you and no amount of persistence will change that.
And the list is capped at fifty. The verdict is a firm answer. The similar names beneath it are the first fifty matches, not the complete set. Read the verdict as the finding and the list as a sample.
A&C Medical Technology is a conflict with Acme
Search Acme and among the conflicts you get A&C Medical Technology and AC Meadowlands.
That is not the search misfiring. New Jersey strips the spaces and punctuation before comparing, so A&C Medical reads as ACMEDICAL and AC Meadowlands as ACMEADOWLANDS. Both begin with ACME.
This is worth more here than in most states, because in New Jersey the machine is making the ruling. Elsewhere the normalization quietly shapes a list you then interpret. Here it directly produces the Not Available you are relying on. When the verdict surprises you, this is usually why, and it is the state showing you how it reads names, which is the same way it will read yours.
How much weight the verdict carries
The two answers are not equally strong, and it helps to know which way each one leans.
Not Available is close to conclusive. The state has run your name against its own file and reported a collision.
Available is weaker. It means nothing on file conflicts today, not that the Division will accept the filing when it arrives. That decision sits under N.J. Stat. Title 42 and is made by a person, on the day.
Before you rely on it
Read the verdict, not the list. The list is a capped sample; the verdict is the finding.
Do not expect to research a company here. This tool checks names. That is its whole job.
Try the name without spaces yourself. If it collides with something when you run the letters together, expect the state to see the same collision.
Reserve it if it matters. At $50 a name reservation is cheap next to discovering a conflict after you have printed stationery.
New Jersey filing facts
| Filing | Fee |
|---|---|
| Certificate of Formation | $100.00 |
| Annual Report | $75.00 |
| Name Reservation | $50.00 |
| Name Reservation renewal | $50.00 |
The annual report is not due on a fixed date. It falls on the last day of the month in which the business was formed, every year. Form in March and you file every March. That is unlike most states, which set one deadline for everybody, and it means the date is different for every company, including yours.
Expedited service is available over the counter only, and the prices climb steeply:
| Service | Fee |
|---|---|
| Per filing | $25.00 |
| Same-day by fax | $50.00 |
| Two-hour | $500.00 |
| One-hour | $1,000.00 |
That thousand-dollar one-hour service is the most expensive expediting we have found in any state, and worth knowing about simply so it is never a surprise.
The register absorbed 178,090 applications in the 52 weeks to 26 September 2026, a rise of 13.8%, or about 712 every business day. By volume that is 9th of 51, which is a lot of filings for a state this size.
The most evenly spread naming ground in the country
New Jersey has 106,259 live registered trademarks, a large pool for a small state. What is striking is where they come from.
No city accounts for more than 3.2% of them. Parsippany leads at 3.2%, Jersey City follows at 3.0%, Princeton at 2.5%.
Put that beside Nebraska, where Omaha alone holds 53.7% of the state's marks, and the contrast is complete. Nebraska's register is one city. New Jersey's is the whole state, filed from everywhere and concentrated nowhere.
The words behave the same way:
| word | live marks | times more common than nationally |
|---|---|---|
| wyndham | 591 | 37x |
| jersey | 1,066 | 26x |
| ultra | 615 | 3x |
| clean | 713 | 2x |
| white | 569 | 2x |
| fresh | 814 | 2x |
| kitchen | 538 | 2x |
| fit | 571 | 2x |
Only two words are genuinely crowded: the state's own name, and wyndham, which at 591 marks and thirty-seven times the national rate is one company's portfolio rather than a naming trend.
Everything else (fresh, clean, ultra, fit, white, kitchen) sits at two to three times normal, which is to say barely above ordinary. These are the generic words that turn up mildly over-represented in every state in the country.
The practical reading: unless you are reaching for Jersey itself, New Jersey is not a state where the trademark register is likely to be what stops you.
What the New Jersey portal looks like
Captured from the live register. Personal names and addresses are blacked out; everything else is as the state publishes it.

Common questions about New Jersey business entity searches
How do I check if an LLC exists in New Jersey?
Search the name on this page or on the state's own portal. What New Jersey does by default is worth knowing before you read the result: single box, availability check. A match means the entity is on file, and its status line tells you whether it is still active.
How do I verify a company is registered in New Jersey?
Search the name, then open the record rather than reading the results line. You get nothing. New Jersey answers whether the name is available and lists the similar names it found. There is no record to open, no status, and no filing history. The status on the record is the one to trust: a dissolved company still appears in a search and still holds its name.
Does a clear search mean my New Jersey business name is approved?
Not on its own. A no-match result means the name is not on the New Jersey register today, which is a preliminary answer rather than approval: New Jersey Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services decides when it reviews the filing. Worth knowing about New Jersey in particular: the verdict is the useful part, but read the small print: the list of similar businesses shows only the first fifty matches. Not Available is a firm answer; the list beneath it is not the whole picture.
Can I look up who owns a business in New Jersey?
New Jersey has no record page at all. The tool returns a verdict on the name and a list of similar ones, and there is nothing to open.
How much does it cost to register a business name in New Jersey?
New Jersey Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services charges $100 to file the Certificate of Formation, which is the document that forms the company, and currently takes 3-5 business days to process. Reserving a name beforehand is a separate and smaller fee. Confirm the figure with the state before you file: schedules move.
