New Mexico Business Entity Search
Search the state's official business records.
New Mexico's register is at enterprise.sos.nm.gov, free and without an account. Two things about it matter more than anything else: it runs a week behind, and it will not forgive a missing full stop.
It is a week behind
On 10 September the register had processed filings received through 3 September. A seven-day gap.
Several states publish a processing date: Tennessee's moved forward during a single working morning, Michigan runs three days behind, Alabama two. New Mexico is the furthest back of any we have measured.
The consequence is direct: a company registered in the last week will not appear, and a clear result tells you nothing about names claimed in that window. If you are checking a name before filing, that is a real gap and the only defense is knowing it exists.
Type the punctuation
The page tells you this and it is easy to skim past: if the business you are looking for contains a special character, you have to type that character to get results.
That is the opposite of how most registers behave. Ohio ignores punctuation entirely, so a search for Acme finds A.C.M.E. South Carolina strips ampersands, so Acme finds A&C Metal. New Mexico does neither. The character is part of the string, and leaving it out means no match.
So if the name you are checking might be filed with a full stop, a hyphen or an ampersand, search it both ways.
Standing, kept separate
The record splits annual report standing and registered agent standing into their own fields rather than collapsing both into one status.
That is the same idea North Dakota takes to three fields and Wyoming to five. Two is enough to answer the useful question: a company not in good standing is either behind on paperwork or missing an agent, and those are different problems.
The record also carries the business name and status, the initial filing date, the entity type and sub-type, and where it was formed.
Liens, notaries and trademarks have their own tabs
Alongside the business search. If your question involves a mark rather than a company, it is a different tab rather than a different website, which is more than several states manage.
New Mexico runs the same software as Michigan, Pennsylvania, Idaho, Montana and North Dakota. Each of the six configures it differently, so do not carry assumptions between them.
Who decides
With the register a week behind, a clear result is weaker evidence here than almost anywhere. The decision itself is made on examination under the New Mexico Limited Liability Company Act, N.M. Stat. Chapter 53, Article 19.
Before you rely on it
Assume the last week is missing. The register says so itself.
Search with and without punctuation. New Mexico will not do it for you.
Read both standings, not just the status.
New Mexico filing facts
| Filing | Fee |
|---|---|
| Articles of Organization | $50.00 |
| Annual report | none |
New Mexico is one of the cheapest states in the country to keep an LLC alive: $50 once, and nothing recurring at the Secretary of State.
The biennial report requirement does not apply to LLCs, so after the formation fee there is no further state filing. Compare Delaware's $400 annual tax, Rhode Island's real $450, or North Carolina's $200 report.
Everything is filed online. New Mexico accepts no paper filings at all, and the formation fee is non-refundable.
A sourcing note: the $50 fee and the no-report rule come from search summaries of the state's own material rather than from a fee schedule we read directly. Both are widely consistent, but confirm with the Secretary of State before relying on them.
We are not quoting a name reservation fee; it is not on the material we found.
Seven days behind, the register still took 44,750 applications across the 52 weeks to 26 September 2026, up 17.9%, or 179 a business day, ranking 36th of 51.
What the register will not tell you
New Mexico has 6,720 live registered marks, and the second word on the list is not one you would predict:
| word | live marks | times more common than nationally |
|---|---|---|
| edible | 386 | 349x |
| mexico | 416 | 179x |
| santa | 226 | 50x |
| casino | 168 | 37x |
| natural | 107 | 6x |
| center | 106 | 3x |
| life | 149 | 2x |
Edible at 349 times the national rate, on 386 marks, sits above the state's own name. Montana shows the same word at 169x. Two states with legal cannabis markets and a term that means something specific in them. We note the pattern and go no further.
Santa at 50x is Santa Fe arriving as one word, and casino at 37x reflects an industry with a substantial presence here and almost none in most states.
Below those four the register is ordinary: natural, center and life at two to six times normal.
Albuquerque files 44.7% of New Mexico's marks and Santa Fe 21.4%, two cities accounting for two-thirds of the state's trademark activity.
What the New Mexico portal looks like
Captured from the live register. Personal names and addresses are blacked out; everything else is as the state publishes it.

Common questions about New Mexico business entity searches
How do I check if an LLC exists in New Mexico?
Search the name on this page or on the state's own portal. What New Mexico does by default is worth knowing before you read the result: single box; Contains behaviour observed, advanced panel not opened. A match means the entity is on file, and its status line tells you whether it is still active.
How do I verify a company is registered in New Mexico?
Search the name, then open the record rather than reading the results line. You get the business name and status, annual report standing and registered agent standing, kept separate, the initial filing date, entity type and sub-type and where it was formed. The status on the record is the one to trust: a dissolved company still appears in a search and still holds its name.
Does a clear search mean my New Mexico business name is approved?
Not on its own. A no-match result means the name is not on the New Mexico register today, which is a preliminary answer rather than approval: New Mexico Secretary of State decides when it reviews the filing. Worth knowing about New Mexico in particular: it is further behind than any other state that publishes the figure. On 10 September it had processed filings received through 3 September, a week's gap. A company registered in the last week will not appear.
Can I look up who owns a business in New Mexico?
The New Mexico register shows the registered agent and, depending on the filing type, officers or organizers. It does not list members or shareholders for every entity, so the register identifies who accepts legal service rather than who owns the company.
How much does it cost to register a business name in New Mexico?
New Mexico Secretary of State charges $50 to file the Articles of Organization, which is the document that forms the company, and currently takes 1-3 business days to process. Reserving a name beforehand is a separate and smaller fee. Confirm the figure with the state before you file: schedules move.
