Why is my LLC not showing up in a search?

Last updated .

A registered business missing from the search is almost always one of seven things. They are listed here roughly in order of how often they turn out to be the cause.

1. It is too recent

Most states publish a new registration within a day or two. Some take longer, and a few batch overnight. A filing accepted this morning may not be searchable until tomorrow. If you have a confirmation number, the filing exists whether or not the search shows it.

2. You searched the full name

Searching “Acme Holdings LLC” can miss a record filed as “ACME HOLDINGS, L.L.C.”. Several state portals match more literally than people expect. Search the distinctive part alone and leave the designator off.

3. Wrong state

An LLC appears on the register of the state that formed it, plus any state where it separately registered as a foreign entity. A business operating in five states may appear on one register only.

4. The search is exact-match by default

Several state portals do not do partial matching unless you choose a different search type. The option is often a dropdown labelled something like “starts with” or “contains”.

5. It was administratively dissolved

Some portals hide inactive records unless you explicitly ask for them. A business that stopped filing annual reports may still exist on the register while being invisible in the default view.

6. The name changed

Registers show the current name. If the business changed its name, the old one may only appear in a name-history view, if the state offers one at all.

7. The search silently failed

This is the one worth dwelling on. Several state portals screen automated and unusual traffic, and when they reject a request they frequently return an empty result rather than an error. An empty result and a failed search look identical.

The practical consequence: never treat a single empty result as proof a name is available. Reload the page and search again. If a name you know exists does not come back, the search is broken, not the register.

Which state portals put a step in front of the search

We drive all 51 of these portals directly, so this is observed rather than reported. The distinction that matters is whether a person actually sees something: a visible challenge you can complete, or background screening that fails silently and looks like an empty result.

Common questions

Why is my LLC not showing up in a search?

Most often the filing is still processing, the name is spelled or punctuated differently on the record, or you are searching the wrong state. Processing time alone explains most cases in the first few weeks.

How long before a new LLC appears on the register?

From same day to several weeks depending on the state and whether you filed online or on paper. The typical processing time for each state is published on its state page here.

Does a missing search result mean the filing failed?

Not by itself. Confirm against the filing receipt or the state’s own record before assuming anything went wrong, because search indexes can lag the register they draw from.

You can check a name against all 50 states and the District of Columbia from the search on our home page. Every result links back to the state office that holds the record.
