Use the right URL. The path /NameAvailabilitySearch redirects to a Utah-ID login and looks, reasonably enough, like the whole thing is gated. It is not. /EntitySearch/OnlineEntitySearch is public and needs nothing.
We got that wrong ourselves before checking, which is how we know the mistake is easy to make.
Status, and the reason behind it
Utah splits the status from the detail underneath it.
A company reads Inactive with Administratively Dissolved beneath, or Active with Current. Two fields rather than one compound string, so you get the state and the cause separately.
That is the same idea California takes furthest by naming the agency responsible, and North Dakota and Wyoming take further still with three and five standings. Utah's two are enough to answer the question that matters: not just whether a company is in trouble but what kind.
Records also carry the date the status was last updated, and a renew button where one applies.
Six ways in, and one you will not expect
The search takes a name, an entity number, a domicile name, an assumed name, a principal name or a registered agent name.
Domicile name is the unusual one. A foreign company registered in Utah often trades here under a different name from the one it holds at home, and Utah lets you search either. Most states hold that information on the record and will not let you search it.
Change the match, and read the type column
It starts on Starts With. Switch it to Contains before you conclude a name is free.
Then read the type column. A great many Utah results are assumed names rather than companies, and an assumed name in use still means somebody is trading under it. Results also carry any other name the entity holds, a filing date and time, a file date, a subtype and the entity number.
Who decides
Filings are recorded; acceptance is judged by the Division on examination, under the Utah Revised Uniform Limited Liability Company Act, Utah Code Title 48, Chapter 3a.

Check anything you read elsewhere against these. Older figures of $54 and $18 circulate widely; the current schedule, effective 1 July 2025, puts formation at $59. The $18 renewal happens to still be right, which is exactly how a stale source stays plausible.
The renewal figure includes a $5 surcharge for the state's single sign-on portal, a fee for the login system rather than for the filing, which is unusual enough to notice.
At $59 to form and $18 a year Utah is inexpensive on both counts: cheaper than Ohio's $99 to start, and a fraction of Massachusetts's $500 to keep.
One genuinely unusual entry on the schedule: Utah offers a certificate of organization for a decentralized autonomous organization at $300. Very few states recognize a DAO as a registrable entity at all.

What the register will not tell you
Utah has 30,050 live registered marks, and the shape is unusual: one heavily contested word and then almost nothing.

Utah at 127 times the national rate is the only word above six times normal. After it the list collapses straight into the generic: life, home, pro and com are the boosters that turn up mildly over-represented in every state.
Mountain at 6x is the landscape, and it is far milder here than in Vermont (16x), Idaho (10x) or Montana (18x), which is surprising for a state that is mostly mountains.
There is no industry cluster of the kind Tennessee has with music, Pennsylvania with health, or Massachusetts with capital and partners. Utah's register is the state's name and then open country.

The office handles registration, not disputes. If a name is already taken, they will tell you it is unavailable but not who holds it beyond what the public record shows, and they will not advise on whether your name infringes someone’s mark.

Search the name on this page or on the state's own portal. What Utah does by default is worth knowing before you read the result: starts With. A match means the entity is on file, and its status line tells you whether it is still active.
How do I verify a company is registered in Utah?
Search the name, then open the record rather than reading the results line. You get entity name, number, type and subtype, profession where one applies, formation date, entity status with separate status details and the date the status was last updated. The status on the record is the one to trust: a dissolved company still appears in a search and still holds its name.
Does a clear search mean my Utah business name is approved?
Not on its own. A no-match result means the name is not on the Utah register today, which is a preliminary answer rather than approval: Utah Division of Corporations and Commercial Code decides when it reviews the filing. Worth knowing about Utah in particular: it matches on Starts With until you change it, so switch to Contains before you conclude a name is free. Read the type column as well: a great many results are Assumed Name (DBA) rather than companies, and a DBA still occupies the name.
Can I look up who owns a business in Utah?
The Utah register shows the registered agent and, depending on the filing type, officers or organizers. It does not list members or shareholders for every entity, so the register identifies who accepts legal service rather than who owns the company.
